BBM Magazine 104 - September/Eylül 2026
BBM • SEPTEMBER - EYLÜL 2026 35 NEWS HABER back onto the agenda under the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency. No wheat supply problem expected for Türkiye’s domestic consumption Despite the risks in the Black Sea, Türkiye delivered a strong performance in the 2026 production season, Genç said. He noted that nearly 90 percent of the harvest had been complet- ed, with wheat production expected to reach approximately 24 million tonnes and barley production around 11 million tonnes. Stating that these volumes would more than meet Türkiye’s do- mestic requirements, Genç said: “We have no problem whatso- ever with wheat. The main difficulty may arise in securing the raw materials we import from Russia and Ukraine for export- oriented production.” The programme also highlighted the importance of Black Sea trade for the imported raw materials used by the flour and pasta industries under the Inward Processing Regime. It was noted that the feed industry faces a more immediate supply risk for raw materials such as soybeans, corn and sunflower seeds. Genç said they did not anticipate a serious short-term problem for the flour and pasta industries, but emphasised that the daily flow of supplies was more critical for the feed sector. He added that more distant supply markets, including Brazil and Mexico, could be considered as alternatives to the Black Sea region. Türkiye could become a hub for transit grain trade According to HUBUDER Chairman Genç, restoring the grain corridor would create significant opportunities for Türkiye not only in terms of raw material supplies but also in transit trade. Stating that Türkiye’s port, storage and logistics infrastructure was ready to undertake this role, Genç said: “Our ports current- ly have available capacity. The operational areas and storage facilities at our ports are extensive. We could bring products to Türkiye aboard large Panamax vessels and conduct transit trade to other countries from here. We believe we can accom- plish this with ease.” “It is difficult to compete globally at current prices” Genç also addressed the possibility of using Türkiye’s high production volumes for direct wheat exports, noting that cur- rent price levels made international competition difficult. He said TMO prices corresponded to approximately USD 350 per tonne, while global market prices remained at around USD 250–260 per tonne even after the latest developments in the Black Sea. Under these conditions, he added, it would not be easy for Türkiye to compete on price in wheat exports. Genç recalled that Türkiye exported approximately 1.8 million tonnes of durum wheat to around 78 countries in 2023. At the time, global prices had reached USD 400–450 per tonne, creat- ing a significant export opportunity for Türkiye. However, he said they did not expect a similar price environment in 2026, as there was currently no overall supply shortage in global production.
