BBM • APRIL - NİSAN 2026 BBM • APRIL - NİSAN 2026 20 21 NEWS NEWS HABER HABER Sri Lanka, where the Maha rice harvest is underway Bangladesh, currently in its critical Boro rice season India, facing reduced domestic fertilizer production ahead of the Kharif season Egypt, highly exposed due to reliance on wheat imports Sudan, already facing acute food insecurity In Sub-Saharan Africa, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique are particularly exposed due to high depen- dence on fertilizer imports. Major agricultural exporters such as Brazil may also face production impacts, with potential spillovers into global mar- kets. Torero also highlighted two critical secondary risks: po- tential declines in income flows from Gulf economies could affect millions of households in developing countries relying on remittances, and export restrictions could further tighten global supply and exacerbate price volatility. FAO SETS OUT SHORT-, MEDIUM- AND LONG-TERM RESPONSES Torero called for urgent, coordinated international action. In the short term, it is critical to establish alternative trade corridors, provide emergency financial support to import- dependent countries, and ensure farmers have access to credit. In the medium term, countries need to diversify fertilizer import sources, strengthen regional reserves, and avoid ex- port restrictions. In the long term, FAO recommends investing in sustain- able, input-efficient agriculture, scaling alternative fertilizer technologies such as green ammonia, and treating food systems as strategic infrastructure. 12 The situation also remains signiÞcantly below the 1970s food crisis. Nonetheless, the conßictÕs ripple effects on food costs are a growing concern and cumulative effects could bring markets to previous extremes. Importers and producers are growing anxious that the Gulf conßict could reignite food inßation just as the world was recovering from the 2022–2023 food price crisis (FAO et al. , 2025). Evolution of FAO Food Price Index in nominal and real terms Source: FAO. 2026. Food Price Index. 1.3.1 Differentiated responses across commodities In early March, commodities like wheat, rice, corn and vegetable oils saw prices Þrming on international markets, exacerbated by panic buyi g and stockpiling. Volatility has increased but some commodities were on an upward trend before the beginning of the conßict. Crucially, many fear a Òcross-commodity price contagion,Ó when a price shock in one commodity spreads to other commodities, pushing their prices up. If farmers cut fertilizer use due to high costs, future harvests may shrink, leading to tighter grain supplies and a surg in food pric s later in 2026. Higher energy prices drive up costs for farm inputs like fuel and electricity and transportation, while pricier fertilizer makes crop production more expensive. As one of the world’s most significant stops for the bakery, pastry, ice cream, and chocolate technologies sectors, IBAK- TECH is preparing to host professionals for the 15th time. Following a meticulous evaluation of industry dynamics, the exhibition has been shifted from the spring period to autumn and will take place at the Istanbul Expo Center (IFM) between October 14–17, 2026. IBAKTECH 2026 will bring professionals together in a total of 7 halls this year, increasing its capacity compared to the previ- ous edition. This expansion, spanning an area of 80,000 m², will allow more exhibitor brands and innovative technologies to be displayed under one roof. The fair will gather a wide range of products at a single center, from bakery and pastry machinery to ingredients, conveyor systems, and packaging solutions. Having brought together over 500 exhibitors from 25 coun- tries with more than 90,000 visitors from 118 countries in previ- ous years, IBAKTECH aims to raise the bar even higher in 2026. Special visitor programs and extensive promotional activities, particularly aimed at the African, Russian, and Central Asian mar- kets, further solidify the international character of the exhibition. As a result of consultations with industry stakeholders, the month of October was determined to be more suitable for in- vestment cycles and trade calendars, aiming to provide maxi- mum commercial efficiency for participants. IBAKTECH, the Giant Industry Gathering, Moves to October IBAKTECH, Eurasia’smost prestigious trade platform in the fields of bakery, pastry, and confectionery technologies, continues its growth with its 15th edition. Rescheduled to October in line with the expectations of industry stake- holders, the exhibition will open its doors in 2026 across 7 halls and a massive area of 80,000 square meters.
