The fourth factory of Istanbul Public Bread (IHE), a subsidiary of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), "Ahmet İsvan Public Bread Factory" was opened with a ceremony.
The fourth and largest public bread factory in Istanbul was put into service with the opening ceremony attended by CHP Leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu said that the newly opened Ahmet İsvan Public Bread Factory is Turkey's largest facility in its field.
Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu expressed that they have been working to improve the quality of life of 16 million people since the first day and added: “I would like to commemorate our late Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet İsvan, who the facility we are opening today is named after. Because his just, egalitarian administration and democratic personality are one of our biggest inspirations. The late mayor did not discriminate against anyone living in this city. He provided services to the slum areas and equipped the city with playgrounds. He fought hard to give back the people's lands to the people. In short, he exhibited an extremely strong example of 'populist municipalism'. He also founded Public Bread in 1977 so that the people of this city could eat bread at a cheaper price. The name Ahmet İsvan continues to live in the works he added to Istanbul, in our factory that we opened here today, and in many other facilities. For this reason, we have accepted our Ahmet İsvan Public Bread Factory as one of the important milestones in our '150 Projects in 150 Days' service marathon. When I was the Mayor of Beylikdüzü, I visited him in Yalova and kissed his hands. I am feeling the memories of those moments with pride, I remember them with mercy."
A €110-MILLION INVESTMENT
İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu pointed out that the facility is the fourth factory of Istanbul Public Bread. “It has been planned before, but only planned. For a long time, it went nowhere fast. Only 1% of it was completed until we started working in 2019. We quickly put our hands on the project and invested 110 million Euros in the machinery in it. We made it ready for service in a short time. And happily, we are bringing it into service for 16 million Istanbulites today. Our factory has the distinction of being the largest facility in its field, that is, among sourdough bread producing facilities. We will offer approximately 1 million 500 pieces of bread per day to the public with healthy, modern and high-quality production in our three lines within the factory. With our first line, we are adding a capacity of 250 thousand to the daily normal capacity of Istanbul Public Bread. On the second production line in our factory, we produce one million pieces of packaged Mediterranean bread per day. In the third line, we produce nearly 200-250 thousand different weights and different types of sandwich loaves, hamburger rolls, or round bread.

Our primary goal is, of course, to meet the most basic bread needs of the low-income and needy families. Besides, we will ensure that Istanbulites have access to nutritious, healthful bread and bakery products. Our citizens who have health problems such as celiac and PKU (Phenylketonuria) and who are fed gluten-free and low-protein will also be able to benefit from these products," he said.
