Following the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, held in Hamburg on 29 and 30 June, MC Mühlenchemie hosted the Millers for Nutrition coalition for its annual meeting at the company's FlourWorld Museum in Wittenburg. Representatives of the coalition's strategic fortification partners, ecosystem partners, and the Gates Foundation came together to discuss how stronger partnerships and market-based solutions can accelerate access to fortified staple foods and improve nutrition worldwide.

This shared commitment had already been evident during the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, where Millers for Nutrition joined governments, businesses, multilateral organizations, and development partners in endorsing the Hamburg Call to Action on Catalyzing Large-Scale Food Fortification to End Child Malnutrition by 2030. In doing so, the coalition reaffirmed its goal of expanding access to fortified staple foods through collaborative, market-based approaches.

MC Mühlenchemie is a founding member and strategic partner of the coalition as an expert in flour fortification. Millers for Nutrition is a public-private-partnership that works with food processors, industry partners, governments, and development organizations to make food fortification easier, more rewarding, and more sustainable. Today, the coalition works with more than 900 millers across Africa and Asia.

HIDDEN HUNGER AS A GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Hidden hunger continues to affect more than two billion people worldwide. Food fortification is considered one of the most effective and scalable measures to address micronutrient deficiency. Sustainable, long-term impact, however, depends on close collaboration between governments, development organizations, the private sector, and food processors to build markets that enable the consistent production of high-quality fortified staple foods.

 STRONG PARTNERSHIPS FOR REAL IMPACT

"Every day, billions of people consume flour-based foods. Ensuring that these products contain essential vitamins and minerals is one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to fight hidden hunger and prevent malnutrition," said Torsten Wywiol, CEO of the Stern-Wywiol Group, of which MC Mühlenchemie is part. "But achieving real impact takes far more than providing technology. It takes committed millers, reliable quality systems, supportive governments, and strong partnerships. Hamburg has a long tradition of connecting people and ideas, and this meeting showed once again what can be achieved when partners from around the world come together with a shared goal. Being close to our customers worldwide gives us the opportunity to turn innovation into practical solutions that make a real difference where it matters most. Over the past five years, it has been inspiring to see what this partnership has accomplished together, and we are proud to contribute our expertise as a founding partner of Millers for Nutrition."

As the global market leader in flour treatment and fortification, MC Mühlenchemie brings decades of expertise in flour treatment and food fortification to the coalition. Together with partners from across the ecosystem, the company supports millers in strengthening fortification processes, improving quality assurance, and advancing commercially sustainable fortification programs worldwide.

PROGRESS AND OUTLOOK

The coalition's annual meeting offered an opportunity to reflect on the progress made over the past year and to set priorities for the future. Discussions focused on lessons learned from ongoing implementation, improving enabling market conditions, and developing practical, commercially viable solutions that encourage long-term investment in high-quality food fortification.

"The progress we've seen isn't simply reflected in the numbers. It's reflected in the trusted relationships we've built with more than 900 millers, allowing the coalition to understand their challenges, respond with targeted, data-driven support, and create practical solutions that make quality fortification both achievable and sustainable. That partnership is what will ultimately transform markets," said Rizwan Yusufali, Program Director of Millers for Nutrition.
