Possible restrictions on pasta exports concerns producers

TMSD President Abdülkadir Külahçıoğlu stated that they have received the information that the Ministry of Economy is preparing to restrict pasta exports and that this will lead to the loss of the markets they have gained with great efforts to their competitors.

Turkish Pasta Industry Association (TMSD) President Abdülkadir Külahçıoğlu said that they have received the information that the Ministry of Economy is preparing to restrict pasta exports. Külahçıoğlu stated that they received the information that some measures regarding the price movements in the wheat market are on the table of the Ministry of Economy and added, “Unfortunately, one of these measures is one that will lead suspending exports. Let me be more direct. The pasta sector can export both within the scope of Inward Processing Regime (DIR) and with the wheat in the domestic market, which we call solid export. In order to prevent this, there is a study to stop the solid export. This actually means stopping Turkey's pasta export because the countries and time periods that we can import wheat are limited. If such a decision is taken for us now, the earliest country we can import wheat to is Canada, and the earliest date to arrive in our country is January 15. If an immediate measure will be taken aiming to stop exports and we are told to import first, this will completely stop the export. This will inevitably increase our costs and will be reflected in the shelf prices of pasta. As the pasta sector, we are exporting to 153 countries and we have won these markets in 25 years. Our fall and disruption from this supply chain, even for a few months, means automatically leaving these markets. That is, a 3-month measure to be taken here will cost us the next 30 years."
