The Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) published the 2022 Plant Production Statistics prepared with the data collected and processed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
According to the released statistics, the production of cereals, other plant products, and fruits increased compared to the previous year. In 2022, there was an increase of 14.6% in cereals and other herbal products (excluding feed plants) and 7.7% in fruits, beverages, and medicinal plants in 2022 compared to the previous year and there was a 0.5% decrease in vegetables. Accordingly, the production amounts in 2022 were approximately 70.2 million tons in cereals and other herbal products, 31.6 million tons in vegetables, and 26.8 million tons in fruits, beverages, and medicinal plants.
Cereal production volumes increased by 21.3% in 2022 compared to the previous year with 38.7 million tons. Compared to the previous year, wheat production increased by 11.9% to 19.8 million tons, corn production increased by 25.9% to 8.5 million tons, barley production increased by 47.8% to 8.5 million tons, rye production increased by 36.5% to 273 thousand tons, and oat production increased by 32.2% to 365 thousand tons. In the legumes group, chickpeas increased by 22.1% to 580 thousand tons, dry beans decreased by 11.5% to 270 thousand tons, and red lentils increased by 75.4% to 400 thousand tons. As for the tuber plants, potatoes increased by 2% to 5.2 million tons.
Among oil seeds, soybean production decreased by 14.8% to 155 thousand tons, sunflower production increased by 5.6% to approximately 2.6 million tons. Tobacco production increased by 15% to 82.3 thousand tons, and sugar beet production increased by 6.9% to 19 million tons. Vegetable products production amount decreased by 0.5% in 2022 compared to the previous year to approximately 31.6 million tons.
