Dear Readers,
As we leave behind a truly challenging year for our industry, we see more clearly than ever that the grain and flour sector has been tested not only by economic fluctuations, but also by a profound technological, environmental, and structural transformation. Despite global markets shaped by uncertainty, our industry continues to develop strong reflexes, establish new balances, and build its future with a more conscious and strategic perspective.
The “Factory of the Future” vision featured on this month’s cover is no longer a theoretical ambition; it is a transformation process that is already finding concrete application in the field. Integrated machines communicating with one another, data-driven production management, energy monitoring systems, AI-supported planning, and sustainability-focused investments are reshaping the entire value chain—from milling and pasta production to packaging and retail. Rising energy costs, tightening regulations, and the shortage of skilled labor are pushing companies toward more connected, smarter, and more flexible production models. Today, automation is no longer a choice; it is a fundamental requirement for competitiveness and operational continuity.
One of our special feature files in this issue focuses on the bakery–retail interface, the most fragile link in bread waste. The pressure for product variety, the expectation of “always fresh,” and often unmeasured losses render systematic overproduction almost invisible. However, data-driven measurement and planning systems that reveal the true scale of waste can open the door to healthier production processes and a more balanced supply chain. We are at a stage where our industry must redefine the balance between efficiency and variety.
In our interview pages, we examine the changing dynamics of the Egyptian flour industry. Intense domestic competition, price pressure, and increasing capacity are driving companies more strongly toward exports, while African and Middle Eastern markets stand out as strategic growth areas.
At BBM, we do not merely witness this transformation journey of our industry; through our analyses, interviews, and feature files, we aim to actively contribute to the process.
For an industry that produces together, transforms together, and grows together…
