Turkey’s bread wheat sufficiency dips to 79.9 percent

Turkish Statistical Institute published the plant product balance sheets for the 2021-2022 season. The sufficiency degree of total wheat, the grain with the largest share in the country’s production, was 87.3 percent with a 10-point decrease.

The sufficiency degree, when less than 100, indicates that the production cannot fully meet the domestic demand. A value greater than 100 indicates the existence of exportable and/or stockable quantities after fulfilling the domestic need.

The sufficiency degree is recorded as 87.3 percent in wheat, which has the largest share in total grain production, 151.8 percent in durum wheat, 79.9 percent in bread wheat, 66.8 percent in barley, the most important input of the feed industry, 76,6 percent in corn, and 6 percent in soy.

The decrease in bread wheat is remarkable in TURKSTAT data. Turkey’s bread wheat sufficiency degree, which was at the level of 89.2 percent in the 2020-2021 season, decreased by 10 points compared to the previous year and was recorded as 79.9 percent.

The sufficiency degree is recorded as 75.4 percent in rice and 83.4 percent in dried legumes. The sufficiency degree is calculated as 106.7 percent in dry beans, 57 percent in red lentils and 50.9 percent in green lentils. In chickpea, this ratio was recorded as 96 percent. The sufficiency degree is as low as 59.6 percent in sunflower and 100 percent in sugar.
