Durum wheat surplus masks growing price and quality risks for millers
The world is heading for a third consecutive durum wheat surplus in 2026/27, but pasta millers should not assume that ample grain will mean cheap grain of the quality they need, Areté senior market analyst Filippo Bertuzzi told the Agro Food Summit in Mersin. Rising prices for other grains, farmers withholding durum from sale and tighter supplies of high-protein grades could all support prices despite comfortable global stocks.

Global cereal output set for biggest decline since 2018 amid persistent Black Sea risks
FAO has lowered its forecast for global cereal production in 2026 to 2.98 billion tonnes, with worsening maize prospects driving most of the latest downgrade. Although the world is heading for its second-largest cereal harvest on record, restricted Black Sea export routes are expected to leave more wheat in Russia and Ukraine while encouraging importers to diversify their origins.
