GAPTEAM develops wheat seed yielding one ton per decare

The engineers of the GAP Agricultural Research Institute Directorate are moving rapidly for the breeding and development of local seeds. In Şanlıurfa, 9 bread wheat, 6 durum wheat and 5 barley seed types have been registered.

In Şanlıurfa, 9 types of bread wheat, 6 types of durum wheat and 5 types of barley seeds resistant to seasonal conditions and diseases have been improved and registered.

In Şanlıurfa, 20 wheat varieties developed and registered by the GAP Agricultural Research Institute Directorate (GAPTAEM) in 21 years yield approximately one ton per decare. In Şanlıurfa, one of the provinces with the highest grain production in Turkey and considered as the homeland of wheat, 15 bread and durum wheat varieties developed from local seeds are expected to attract great interest from the farmer with yields up to 50 percent. Among the 20 different local seeds that have been bred and registered, there are 9 types of bread wheat, 6 types of durum wheat and 5 types of barley seeds.

The engineers of GAPTAEM, which is among the 12 Research Institutes affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Turkey and have been working to contribute to the productivity and diversity of the region’s products since 2002, carry out studies for the breeding and development of domestic seeds.
In 21 years, 15 wheat varieties such as bread wheat Polathan, Edessa, Cudi 63 and Başak and durum wheat İlkhan have been developed by crossbreeding indigenous seeds, which provide the highest yield and are resistant to heat, drought and diseases in all harsh climatic conditions of the Southeast of Turkey. The wheat varieties planted in the fertile soils of Şanlıurfa, which is considered the homeland of wheat, are expected to make a great contribution to the flour and pasta industry.
