Kerem Kınık, Head of the Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay) said that Turkish people waste 500,000 tons of bread annually, adding, “This means 80 public hospitals. We have to prevent this waste.”

Kerem Kınık, Head of the Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay) said that the organization carried out works to keep the society on its feet in the case of emergencies and disasters. In his talks at Turkish Red Crescent Konya Branch Ordinary Congress, Kınık said Kızılay fosters hope wherever it goes, adding that young and voluntary people are very important for them. Saying that the society must raise awareness, Kınık said, “We need to tell how they can cope with emergency cases. We need to teach them saving, sharing, and help. We need to teach them the bread is sacred. People sweat blood, cultivate the soil and plant wheat. State supports these activities. These are harvested in hot temperature, milled and turned into flour. Bakery producers wake up at 3-4 AM and bake bread. People that work at different jobs pay money to have this bread. Annually, we throw 500,000 tons of bread to trash. With this money [spent on bread], 80 public hospitals can be constructed. We need to stop this waste. We have to buy as much as we need, and we need to share the surplus.”
