Many people suffer from hunger in the world. On the other hand, huge food waste is going on. Food waste is among the biggest issues of tourism and food sectors. This issue was discussed at the Hotel-Restaurant-Cafe (HO-RE-CA) exhibition in Antalya.
Antalya Fuarcilik hosted a panel called "Preventing Food Waste in HO-RE-CA sector" which was organized by The Union of Out-Of-Home Consumption Suppliers (ETUDER) and Fazla Gida A.S. According to speakers, the value of wasted food in Turkey reached 300 billion liras in a year. It was 250 billion liras in 2014.
Ali Bidi, Board Chairman of Antalya Fuarcilik A.S. (ANFAS), talked about his personal experiences about food waste: "I came to Antalya when I was 12 years old. I was receiving 2.5 liras weekly as an allowance. I had to get by with this money for a whole week. The bread was 50 qurush or so. I was buying a quarter of a loaf of bread. My breakfast was only this bread and 10 gr of cheese. They were selling quarter loaves in the past. Now they are selling many loaves at once. It is hard to create awareness against waste among people that have never experienced financial difficulties. We cannot educate our children against waste. I have an idea. I hope it will also be adopted by schools. I heard that volunteers founded a cooperative initiative in Italy to collect bread waste. They are making pasta and distribute to poor people. I hope we can implement a similar project in Turkey."
